and Invest India (DPIIT) organised Organic Certification program
for Basmati growers under ODOP initiative at Suchetgarh, Jammu.
The Jammu and Kashmir
Trade Promotion Organisation (JKTPO) under its initiative to promote ODOP
products in Jammu and Kashmir and to increase their export potential, has
organized a workshop cum awareness program at Suchetgarh, RS Pura Jammu under National Programme for Organic
Production (NPOP) for organic certification of Basmati rice, a ODOP product of Jammu
District in collaboration with Invest India (One District One Product) team,
DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The National Programme
for Organic Production (NPOP) is responsible for establishing standards for
organic production, encouraging organic farming and marketing, and is overseen
by the APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce & Industries, Government of
India.
The workshop aimed to
provide certification and training to farmers already engaged in producing
organic Basmati, lacking the necessary certification for their product’s
authenticity. This initiative is part of JKTPO's mandate to promote ODOP
products in Jammu and Kashmir and to increase awareness among basmati growing
farmers.
The representatives
from the Agriculture Department, government officials, Basmati growers,
progressive farmers, members of FPOs, a representative from Invest India,
JKTPO, and the certifying agency Aditi Organic Certifications Pvt Ltd Bangalore
were in attendance. The workshop stressed the importance of enhancing organic Basmati
production in the region to meet market demands, upgrading packaging to meet
global standards, which is expected to elevate demand and contribute to the
increased income of farmers.
The drive was attended
by over 110 Basmati producers from Suchetgarh region of Jammu district, and
more farmers are expected to come under organic certification. On spot
registration for Organic Certificate for Basmati was done for 60+ basmati
growers. JKTPO plans to conduct similar activities across different districts
of J&K to promote organic farming for ensuring remunerative prices for the
produce.
